瑞春 Swee Choon: Now serving lunch

Growing up, I was never a fan of dim sum. It was breakfast food (a meal I usually skip), expensive (portions are so small, yet the prices are so high), and mostly made up of stuff I did not eat as a kid (chicken feet? no thanks). I carried these notions about dim sum into my 20s, after which I discovered the likes of Swee Choon and 126 (topic to be continued another day).

For many, Swee Choon requires little introduction. It was a supper place serving dim sum at affordable prices. For me, I never bothered to try it; and it was wifey who first suggests that we visit Swee Choon for dinner some 5 years ago after she found out that it was near our new place. Who knew that the suggestion will lead us to visit Swee Choon 2-3 times every month ever since.

During our latest visit in October, we found out that Swee Choon has extended their working hours to lunchtime. This means the same expansive and affordable menu is now available for lunch! Good for those working/living in the area.

What we had:

The Shanghai Xiao Long Pau is a must-eat in our opinion. The pau skin is thin yet holds together nicely, and the filling is sweet and juicy. I think we never fail to order this at every visit.

The Chee Choong Fun is pretty standard-fare but you won't go wrong with it. Just make sure the waiter/waitress pours in ample sauce when they serve it; we find that it is more shiok when the pieces are soaked-through with the sauce.

The Baked BBQ Pork Pastry is another perennial favourite of ours. The BBQ pork filling compliments the pastry skin very well.

The Steamed Chicken with Egg was something new that I tried this time. I was expecting steamed egg but it was closer to steam chicken dunked in egg drop soup. I must say that it was good from the first taste, and the stock used was very sweet and aromatic.

The Shrimps Fried Rice is not award-winning, but is good enough for filling up the stomach when the dim sum is not enough. I find that it is great for pairing with the steamed chicken with egg or steamed pork ribs. Also worthy of note is the hae bee hiam chilli that is served as condiment. For us, it added a layer of spice and sweetness that compelled us to finish every grain of rice on the plate.

The Onion Pancake is quite good, but the name is poorly translated from 瑞春招牌手撕饼. Instead of onion, it is closer to a scallion-flavoured roti prata. A dish of chilli oil is provided as a dip for the pancake. The wifey likes the dip, while I find that the pancake is equally good, with or without dipping.

Overall, Swee Choon still does not disappoint after 5 years of eating there. We are still trying out items in the menu, which speaks volume about the number of items that they have available. It is a great thing that they are now open for lunch.
